In praise of one man’s silent witness

Re “A Voice for Silence” [Nov. 15]: I’ve been interested in the effects of sound patterns on the human psyche, but I hadn’t really considered the effects of silence ... within the context of the natural world.

While attending graduate school in New Hampshire, I treasured riding my mountain bike miles into the woods, going as deep as possible to find silence. I longingly recall those hours spent listening to wet leaves fall, and I can still hear every twig that snapped as I passed by.

Last year my husband, dog and I went on one of the silent evening hikes in Franklin Canyon. Even my dog knew not to bark; she got into the spirit of silence. For days afterward, she was more spry and spirited than she had been in months.
