L.A. residents who dial 911 on their cellphones within the city are now being routed directly to LAPD dispatchers rather than going through the California Highway Patrol, thanks to a new automated system, officials announced Wednesday.
Police Chief William J. Bratton said the routing system will save time for people in need of police, fire or paramedic help.
The $2.1-million project was paid for by the state, which benefits because the CHP will no longer have to reroute hundreds of thousands of cellphone calls in Los Angeles.
