A Ventura County sheriff’s detective remains on administrative leave after he fatally shot a 25-year-old Santa Paula man who allegedly tried to run him over with a pickup truck.
Adrian Canley was shot about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 2200 block of Los Feliz Drive in Thousand Oaks by a plain-clothes deputy who was interviewing a man about an unrelated crime in a nearby parking lot.
The Sheriff’s Department has not yet identified the officer, said spokesman Capt. Ron Nelson.
Nelson said Canley, who appeared to be agitated, walked up to the detective, who acknowledged that he was a law enforcement officer.
Canley then climbed into a pickup truck and tried to run over the detective, who repeatedly warned the man to stop, authorities said.
Nelson said the detective drew his pistol and fired several shots.
Canley, who was alone in the truck, was struck once.
As the detective and other deputies administered first aid, they found a loaded handgun in Canley’s waistband.
He was taken to Los Robles Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
