Jockey Pat Valenzuela, who has dodged more bullets than John Wayne, is back in the saddle. Horses surely run for him, but he has been possessed by a devil that keeps him running away from them. His feats of extraction from impending expulsion are legendary and could use a proper sobriquet.
“Houdini” is OK, but I would suggest “the Artful Dodger.”
