Aegon to acquire two Merrill units

Dutch insurer Aegon said it had agreed to buy Merrill Lynch Life Insurance Co. and ML Life Insurance Co. of New York for $1.3 billion in cash to boost its sales of variable annuities and distribution in the United States.
Aegon also said that it would form a strategic relationship with Merrill in insurance and investment products and that Aegon’s Transamerica companies would support Merrill’s financial advisor network.
