Riverside County sheriff’s deputies shot and killed a suspected drunk driver late Tuesday as he allegedly accelerated toward them after a brief chase, authorities said.
Deputies tried to stop the man about 11:20 p.m. after he drove onto a curb and ran a red light and a stop sign in Home Gardens, an unincorporated community near Corona, according to sheriff’s investigator Jerry Franchville.
The driver led deputies on a seven-minute chase before he was cornered in a residential cul-de-sac near the 13000 block of April Drive, Franchville said. Deputies yelled to the driver to show his hands, but he instead made a U-turn and accelerated toward the officers, authorities said.
Four deputies opened fire and shot the driver, officials said. The Jaguar then slammed into the driver’s side of one of the patrol cars. The suspect, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene, Franchville said.
Sheriffs with the department’s homicide unit are continuing to investigate.
