Quake caused problems at nuclear plant

A long list of problems came to light at the world’s largest nuclear power plant a day after a powerful earthquake.
The Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant suffered broken pipes, water leaks and spills of radioactive waste when the quake hit Monday, said the operator, Tokyo Electric Power Co. There also was a small fire at an electrical transformer and a small amount of radioactivity emitted from an exhaust stack.
The mayor of nearby Kashiwazaki city ordered the plant to remain closed until its safety could be assured.
