‘SEXY’? NO. TRY ‘SCARY.’

Re “Opera’s Sexy Makeover” [Nov. 22]: Bass baritone Erwin Schrott is quoted as saying, “Singing is just part of it. In fact, I don’t even think singing is the most important part.” The gist of the article is that audiences prefer sexy, trim singers and that ticket sales reflect this.
In my opinion, this is scary. If this were to become a trend in the opera world, then image would replace real singing talent. Opera is first and foremost a stage for beautiful voices. If the singers can act, that is great also; and if by chance they look great, that is a bonus.
