Burning money at the beach

Re “Donation restores beach bonfires,” Dec. 16
San Diego is certainly fortunate to have someone willing and generous enough to donate almost $260,000 to keep the city from removing 186 fire pits for 18 months.
I’d love to know, however, how it can possibly cost almost $1,000 a year to maintain a fire pit? It makes one think that more than $70 an hour for an autoworker may not be all that much out of line.
