LITTLE MISS JUNO: Will the growing backlash against Diablo Cody temper all the unexpected academy love for this year’s little film that could?
CLIMBING
ANOTHER LOOK: A little retrospective never hurt anyone’s chances. The American Cinematheque features Coen brothers films at the Egyptian Friday and Saturday and a Julie Christie doubleheader, including “Shampoo,” Sunday at the Aero.
THE RIGHT NOTE:
Composer Alan Menken
is a beast with the best song noms. Disney’s
“Enchanted” got three,
only the third time that
has happened. The first? “Beauty and the Beast” with music by the late Howard Ashman and . . . Menken.
AT BASE CAMP
THE SUNDANCE EFFECT: It’s no guarantee, but at least two people who got Oscar nods last week have been through the Sundance Screenwriters Lab -- Paul Thomas Anderson and Tamara Jenkins. Hey, it couldn’t hurt.
BLOODY SUNDAY: With “No Country for Old Men” and “There Will Be Blood” in the best picture race, the red carpet will take on a whole new meaning.
LOOKING FOR A SHERPA
DEAD END? Just when things were looking up with a Golden Globe win, “Atonement” may have been derailed by director Joe Wright and stars Keira Knightley and James McAvoy’s missing Oscar noms.
BRAVO! Ethan Coen wrote “Almost an Evening,” a collection of three short plays being staged in New York to largely positive reviews. Might that give him extra heft in the adapted screenplay race?
STUNG: Powerhouse DreamWorks Animation’s hit “Bee Movie” got aced out by box-office dud “Surf’s Up” from Sony Animation, which is barely still in business.
