* No. 1 North Carolina 113, No. 16 Mount St. Mary’s 74: The Tar Heels (33-2) rolled past the Mountaineers (16-15) at Raleigh to continue their near-perfect run in NCAA tournament games played in their home state, improving to 22-1 in those games. Their 113 points are the second-most in school history for an NCAA game, trailing only a 123-point showing in a second-round win against Loyola Marymount in 1988.
* No. 2 Tennessee 72, No. 15 American 57: “Our kids were obviously disappointed they didn’t get a No. 1 seed,” Volunteers Coach Bruce Pearl said. “But we’re still a long way from where that would make a difference.” Ahead, 53-51, with 5:45 left at Birmingham, Ala., Tennessee (30-4) held the 15th-seeded Eagles (22-12) to only one basket the rest of the way.
* No. 3 Louisville 79, No. 14 Boise State 61: Coming off a disappointing one-and-done performance in the Big East Conference tournament, the Cardinals (25-8) ran away from the Broncos (26-7) at Birmingham, Ala. Leading scorer David Padgett didn’t even take a shot in the first half and Louisville still breezed, helped by a dozen three-point baskets.
* No. 6 Oklahoma 72, No. 11 St. Joseph’s 64: The Sooners (23-11) celebrated their return to the postseason with a win over the Hawks (21-13) at Birmingham, Ala. David Godbold scored 25 points, including the Sooners’ first 11 of the second half. Oklahoma’s 25-year postseason streak ended last season.
* No. 7 Butler 81, No. 10 South Alabama 61: Pete Campbell scored 26 points and made eight three-point baskets, including one at the halftime buzzer, and the Bulldogs (30-3) routed the Jaguars (26-7) at Birmingham, Ala. It’s the fourth year in a row the Bulldogs, who set a school record for wins, advanced beyond the first round of the NCAA tournament.
* No. 9 Arkansas 86, No. 8 Indiana 72: Sonny Weems scored a career-high 31 points to lead the Razorbacks (23-11) past the Hoosiers (25-8) at Raleigh, N.C. Arkansas ended a five-game losing streak in NCAA tournament games dating to a first-round victory against Siena in 1999.
