The Tony Awards are retiring the special theatrical event category.
The elimination will take effect beginning with the 2009-10 season. The Tonys said that qualifying entries will be placed into best play or best musical categories and that the Tonys can still bestow a “Special Tony Award” if merited.
This year’s winner of the special theatrical event Tony was Liza Minnelli’s “Liza’s at the Palace.”
