The city’s mayor is calling for an investigation into phony late-night phone calls apparently aimed at discrediting City Council candidate John Mirisch.
The prerecorded calls apparently began late Thursday night, between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m. A woman with slurred speech asked voters to cast their ballots for Mirisch, one of 11 candidates running for three open seats on the Beverly Hills City Council, before abruptly hanging up. Those who received the calls have complained about the rude intrusion.
Mirisch, a first-time candidate, said he did not authorize the calls and did not know who made them.
It’s unclear how many of the calls were made, but Mirisch said he had received numerous complaints.
Barry Brucker, the city’s current mayor, who is also running for reelection, asked the chief of police and city clerk to investigate the incident.
