Re “Capping Yucca’s risk,” editorial, March 19
Politics again defeats science, and it appears we are abandoning $8 billion worth of work at Yucca Mountain.
The Times’ conclusion that this is a good thing because nuclear energy is a bad solution for climate change is mystifying.
Nuclear energy is thriving because it is both clean and efficient. Electric utilities do not care whether they build windmills or nuclear plants as long as they reliably generate electricity the utilities can sell at a reasonable price. And now electric utilities are, albeit cautiously, investing in the next generation of nuclear plants.
With a phenomenal safety record and intense regulation, nuclear is not a “risky” technology. As for costs, shouldn’t the market decide?
