KNBC-TV cancels ‘Midday Report’

Reporting from New York — KNBC-TV Channel 4 has canceled “Midday Report,” its 11 a.m. newscast anchored by Kim Baldonado, and is running repeats of “Access Hollywood” in its place.
The newscast, which aired for the last time on Feb. 12, “was taken off the schedule in order to reallocate resources,” according to KNBC spokeswoman Erin Dittman.
Baldonado, who has won awards for her coverage of education and homelessness, will continue as a general assignment reporter for the station. She took over “Midday Report” in July after serving as a weekend anchor.
The show’s cancellation was lamented on the “Watercooler” bulletin board of the television news industry website TVSpy.com under a message string labeled “Death of KNBC.”
Once flush with advertising revenue, local stations around the country have cut staff and curtailed newscasts in the last few years as the dour economy has eroded profits. In 2008, CBS Corp.-owned stations laid off more than 150 employees in 13 cities, including well-known anchors such as Harold Greene and Ann Martin.
