Like experimental short stories? There’s an app for that

There’s an app for pretty much everything these days, and book lovers certainly haven’t been left behind — smartphone and tablet users can download programs like iPoe 2 and Stride & Prejudice.
The literary website Electric Literature is hoping to make your iPad even more bookish with a new app based entirely on a short story by Israeli author Alex Epstein.
True Legends will be available free starting Wednesday at Apple’s App Store. The “multidimensional” app is based on Epstein’s story about a blind piano tuner and features a soundtrack by New York instrumental band Ulrich Ziegler and animation by graphic artist Tsach Weinberg. According to a release from Electric Literature, “The artists collaborated to create a storytelling app with intuitive navigation — using simple gestures instead of page turns — that allows the reader to drift deeper and deeper into the world of the story.”
It’s not the first time Epstein has played with publishing formats. His collection “For My Next Illusion I Will Use Wings” originally ran as a Hebrew-language Facebook photo album, and he’s also published a limited-edition book written entirely in longhand.
Andy Hunter, the founder of Electric Literature, called Epstein’s work “inspiring,” adding: “We are excited to present this unique app to readers everywhere. We are in an era of publishing innovation and Electric Literature is an enthusiastic participant.”
