Oprah Winfrey donates $2 million to Puerto Rico arts and recovery groups

Oprah Winfrey is opening her wallet on behalf of Puerto Rico to the tune of $2 million, inspired by the artistic efforts of Lin-Manuel Miranda to help the U.S. territory that is still struggling to recover from the 2017 hurricane season.
Half of Winfrey’s contribution will go to the Hispanic Federation’s UNIDOS Disaster Relief & Recovery Program to Support Puerto Rico and half to the Flamboyan Arts Fund, which aims to preserve the arts there. The island was devastated by Hurricane Maria in 2017.
“I was so moved by Lin-Manuel Miranda’s commitment to bring ‘Hamilton’ to Puerto Rico and support the community that served him growing up that I wanted to join in the revitalization efforts of an island so rich in culture, beauty and heritage,” Winfrey said in a statement Monday from the Hispanic Federation.
The “Hamilton” run on the island raised about $15 million for the Flamboyan Arts Fund, which was created by stage and screen star Miranda, his family, “Hamilton” and the Flamboyan Foundation to benefit the arts in Puerto Rico.
