Bill Lockyer

Once considered a leading candidate for governor, Lockyer surprised the political establishment by taking his $10 million war chest and running for a less-stressful office instead. He cited his duties as a new father to little Diego and the corrosive nature of modern politics. One of the most colorful politicians in Sacramento, Lockyer got his law degree during his term as a state Senator. He sees himself as a consumer-oriented attorney general, and he has spearheaded efforts to curb assault weapons. He also has a way with words. During the energy crisis about six years ago, Lockyer said he wanted to see Ken Lay, the former chairman of Enron, in a prison cell with a guy named Spike.
