The wrong idea about Coventry?

Susan SPANO did a slight injustice to Coventry and the English Midlands in “Destruction and Renewal in Coventry, the Phoenix” [Her World, May 1]. Although Coventry’s city center was decimated by wartime aerial bombardment and ruthless postwar modernization, some medieval and Tudor-era gems do survive, including intact parts of a 13th century city wall.

Within a 20-mile radius of Coventry are many sites of historical importance, including the majestic Warwick Castle, the sprawling ruins of Kenilworth Castle, the Georgian splendor of Royal Leamington Spa and Stratford-Upon-Avon.

England’s second-largest city of Birmingham is a mere 30-minute drive, and because Coventry is in the “Heart of England,” amid the rolling Warwickshire countryside, it’s the ideal jumping-off point to visit the picturesque villages of the Cotswolds and the unbridled beauty of Dovedale.

I enjoyed reading about my birthplace in your paper but felt compelled to come to its defense and ensure that it wasn’t blitzed a second time.
