Earthquake: 2.8 quake strikes south of Eureka

A shallow magnitude 2.8 earthquake was reported Monday morning nine miles from Rio Dell in Northern California, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The temblor occurred at 1:12 a.m. PDT at a depth of 17.4 miles.
[Updated, 10:18 a.m. PDT Aug. 19: Later Monday, the USGS downgraded the quake’s magnitude, which had initially been reported as 3.5.]
According to the USGS, the epicenter was 16 miles from Fortuna, 30 miles from Eureka, 33 miles from Bayside and 184 miles from Sacramento.
In the past 10 days, there has been one earthquake magnitude 3.0 and greater centered nearby.
