Three rescued from car that plunged into San Diego’s Mission Bay

Reporting from San Diego — A group of people attending a bonfire came to the rescue Saturday, saving three men from a car that had plunged into Mission Bay.
The vehicle was traveling on the Fiesta Island loop when it missed a turn and dove into the water about 12:30 a.m., San Diego police said. The driver told authorities that he couldn’t see the turn due to foggy conditions.

The driver and two passengers were able to get out of the car through windows, and at least two made it to the roof awaiting rescue because they couldn’t swim, said San Diego Fire-Rescue Capt. Joe Amador.
Nearby witnesses attending a bonfire, described as Army personnel, helped get them to shore before lifeguards and police arrived at the scene.
One occupant was taken to a hospital for treatment of hypothermia, lifeguards said. No other injuries were reported and no arrests were made.
