Letters: Testing tablets

Re “Tablet plan doesn’t compute,” Editorial, Oct. 5
Like Los Angeles Unified School District Supt. John Deasy, I support using tablet computers in our schools. But buying about 700,000 of them without an integrated plan for how they would be used, and therefore what features are essential for their use, would be spending money prematurely.
Based on my 40 years in the computer field followed by 17 years as a volunteer tutor for middle school students, I look forward to the day when tablets are provided to each student with the content that allows the device to be used as a personal tutor. This can be done with today’s technology, but the system should be designed, incrementally implemented and tested before massive numbers of devices are purchased.
