Letters: ‘Never again’

Re “Coming back to life after the Holocaust,” Opinion, Jan. 27

Thanks to Allan Chernoff’s Op-Ed article, we learned about the United Nations declaring Jan. 27 International Holocaust Remembrance Day. As Chernoff notes, the United Nations urged its member states “to develop educational programs that will inculcate future generations with the lessons of the Holocaust in order to help to prevent future acts of genocide.”

After World War II, the cry arose, “Never again.” But it’s happening again. It happened in Cambodia and in Rwanda. Mass killings are happening in Syria. They’re happening in the United States. And in Norway.

Perhaps the educational programs to be developed by the United Nations will be a step forward in arresting the horrors of holocausts and mass killings. The Southern Poverty Law Center, which has been developing educational tools to promote tolerance in the United States for years, would be an apt consultant on the project.
