Cal Poly San Luis Obispo visits Montana today for a Division I-AA
football game that will reunite former Back Bay high school stars
from both teams.
Montana’s Grizzlies (3-1), ranked No. 8 in Division I-AA, have
received contributions from former Newport Harbor High standouts Alan
Saenz and Jeff Marshall.
Cal Poly’s Mustangs (3-1), ranked No. 20 in Division I-AA, have
been aided by former Corona del Mar High performer Mike Hayes, as
well as Newport Harbor product Brant Hill.
Hayes, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound outside linebacker, is second on the
team in tackles (28) and his three sacks are tied for the team lead.
Saenz (6-2, 295), a sophomore defensive tackle, has 10 tackles,
including 3.5 for losses. He has been involved in one sack.
Hill (6-4, 260), a senior defensive tackle who transferred from
Nevada, has 10 tackles and has been in on one sack for the Mustangs,
whose three wins this season equal their total each of the last five
seasons.
Marshall (6-5, 250), a redshirt freshman, was an up-and-coming
backup lineman, before being injured in the season-opener.
He has since undergone season-ending surgery, said a Montana
spokesperson, who is prohibited by NCAA rules from revealing injury
details.
