Newport Harbor High’s freshmen football team moved to 4-0 with a
14-12 nonleague victory over Dana Hills on Oct. 2.
Newport scored on its first possession, driving down the field on
two long carries by Jasen Ruiz.
Ruiz scored the first touchdown on an 8-yard run.
Jarrett Daniel caught a pass from Taylor Sepulveda, filling in for
the injured Kevin Williams, on the two-point conversion.
Nick Frazier’s kickoff pinned Dana Hills at its own 15-yard line
later in the first quarter.
Daniel then intercepted a pass and returned it for a TD to make
the score 14-0.
Dana Hills scored on a 16-yard pass, but couldn’t convert the
extra point, cutting Newport’s lead to 14-6 at halftime.
Both teams struggled to create a drive in a scoreless third
quarter.
Late in the fourth quarter, with Dana Hills driving, Daniel added
his second interception at the 5-yard line, but Newport fumbled at
the Dana 40 and the Dolphins eventually cut the lead to 14-12 with a
touchdown with 29 seconds left.
The extra point failed, sealing the win for Newport.
Also, Brett Houten and Frazier each made several key defensive
plays.
