Sand festival takes over Main Beach

Saturday the Housing and Human Affairs Committee of the city

conducted its first Sand Sculpture Festival with nine entries

participating, one from as far away as Discovery Bay.

The local entries included Village Laguna with Doug Riley and

Michael Hoag, winner of Best Political Theme with their “No Cars”

entry, a replica of Downtown. Eight middle school students from

Thurston won Best Team Effort led by teacher Laura Silver. Team

captain for Arch Beach Heights Dylan Gilbert won Best Artistic Design

with their mermaid. South Laguna’s Frank Lloyd Wrong won the Best

Laguna Rendition for depicting Main Beach and the surrounding hills.

Best Marine Entry was won by J & S sculpture for their dolphin.

The event was held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Main Beach Park and

was held in conjunction with Vision 2030, a residential effort to

look at Laguna over the next 30 years. It was part of their plan for

more community-focused events bringing locals together.

A celebration of the arts

The Laguna Beach Alliance for the Arts, a two-year coalition of 23

Laguna based arts organizations, will hold a “Celebration of the

Arts” at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 23 at Tivoli Terrace.

The dinner will honor the Laguna Beach Visitors and Convention

Bureau for its role in promoting the arts through the city’s Business

Improvement District. Also celebrated will be the 25th anniversary of

the city’s Arts Commission, as well as the celebration of the arts

alliance.

Each alliance member organization has donated a unique

arts-related prize to be auctioned at the event -- with proceeds

funding its programs such as its Web site and the cultural arts

calendar.
