Orange Coast rebounds to tame Tigers

Two days after being swept by the top-rated team in the state, the
Orange Coast College women’s volleyball team rebounded with a 30-20,
30-22, 30-22 Orange Empire Conference victory Friday night at host
Riverside.
Sophomore Christine Woller (Newport Harbor High) led the Pirates
(9-1, 4-1 in the OEC), ranked second to Golden West in the state
poll, with 13 kills, while Donka Drozd tallied 11.
Sophomore Amber McCarthy led Coast with 41 assists and three ace
serves.
Freshman middle blocker Jenny Kuehn tallied four kills, three digs
and three aces against Riverside (2-6, 1-4).
Coast hosts Fullerton in OEC play at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Pirates shut out, 2-0
* SOCCER: Lindsey Smoot, an Orange Coast College transfer, scored
a second-half goal for Santiago Canyon to secure a 2-0 Orange Empire
Conference victory over her former team Friday at Santiago Canyon.
“That was good,” OCC Coach Barbara Bond said. “I was happy for
her.”
Last year, Smoot was looking for more playing time, and Bond
advised her to play for Santiago Canyon, which is in second place in
the OEC.
The Pirates (5-5-1, 4-4-1 in conference), usually one of the top
two teams in the OEC, is in fourth.
Freshman goalkeeper Michelle Vahdatipour recorded eight saves for
OCC, which plays at Cypress Tuesday at 1 p.m.
OCC splits in tourney
* WATER POLO: The Orange Coast College men’s water polo team
scored 13 first-half goals and cruised to a 17-8 victory over Chaffey
in the opening day of the Cypress tournament Friday.
The Pirates began the tourney with a 9-7 loss to Citrus, but came
back with the win over Cypress.
Mike Vanderberg led OCC with four goals, while Jason Grajilaua,
Mike Martin and Tyler Morales scored three goals each.
The Pirates play in consolation action today at 10 a.m. against
Southwestern.

Sage holds off Whitney
* VOLLEYBALL: Sophomores Sophia Hillgren and Cat Dailey recorded
11 and 10 kills, respectively, leading the Sage Hill School girls
volleyball team to a tight, four-game win over Academy League host
Whitney Friday.
The Lightning won, 25-17, 25-23, 23-25, 25-23. Freshman Kelsey
Lawler contributed six service aces for Sage Hill.
‘Eaters rally past UCSB
* VOLLEYBALL: The UC Irvine women’s volleyball team rallied from a
2-1 deficit Friday night to defeat visiting UC Santa Barbara, 30-28,
29-31, 33-35, 30-25, 15-11, to improve to 16-4 overall and 7-1 in the
Big West Conference.
Kelly Wing led Coach Charlie Brande’s squad with 33 kills, while
teammates Trisha White (18 kills), Dana Kurzbard (14), Amanda Vazquez
(12) and Sami Cash (12) also contributed to the offense.
Setter Ashlie Hain had 79 assists.
The scored was tied 38 times in the match and the team exchanged
leads 19 times before 380 fans at Crawford Court.
UCI wins wild one
* SOCCER: UC Irvine (8-3-4, 2-1-2 in the Big West Conference)
defeated Idaho (2-8-4, 0-4) Friday night, 2-1, in a wild game at
Anteater Stadium.
The Anteaters scored in the 17th minute on junior Alyson Spencer’s
goal with assists by Leah Dawson and Hayley McNallan.
Idaho tied it in the 55th minute.
In the 76th minute, Anteater head coach Marine Cano was given his
second yellow card of the match and two minutes later a fight broke
out on the field with one player for Idaho and two players for UCI
receiving red cards. Irvine played the final 12 minutes with nine
players on the field and Idaho had 10.
The Anteaters scored the winning goal with three minutes remaining
on Spencer’s second goal on another assist by Dawson.
UCI goalkeeper Marissa Welliver had one save.
UCI will host the Utah State Aggies on Sunday at 1 p.m. at
Anteater Stadium.
UCI’s Cendejas honored
* HONORS: UC Irvine senior Tessa Cendejas has been selected Big
West Conference female Athlete of the Week for cross country.
Cendejas finished fourth among 199 runners in the Triton Classic
at UC San Diego Oct. 11 with a time of 22:22.7 over 6,000 meters.
Her finish helped the Anteaters to a second-place showing in the
team competition with 62 points.
UCI competes in the Cal Poly Invitational at San Luis Obispo
today.

* YOUTH BASEBALL: Online registration is available for the first
time for the 2004 Costa Mesa National Little League season. Signups
can be made by accessing https://www.cmnll.org.
Early registration, which is $75 per player ($195 maximum per
family), continues until Nov. 28.
After that date, the fee increases to $85. The T-ball fee is $65.
The league serves boys and girls ages 5-12 who live in the area
roughly bounded by the Santa Ana River, MacArthur Boulevard, Fairview
Road, Harbor Boulevard, along with 15th and 16th Streets.
Play begins in March.
