ON THE AGENDA
Here are some items to be considered by the City Council tonight.
CRYSTAL COVE
In their study session tonight, council members will get a crash
course on three projects at Crystal Cove State Park, only part of
which is within the city’s borders. Council members have the option
of just receiving and filing the information, but they could also
choose to bring the matter back at a regular council meeting to
discuss whether the city should take a formal position.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Mayor Steve Bromberg has already said that he believes Crystal
Cove is a concern to Newport Beach residents. So there’s a good
chance the item could reappear on a regular council agenda.
NEW COUNCIL MEMBER
A new face will shine down from the dais tonight as Steve Rosansky
attends his first meeting as a councilman. One of the first orders of
business for all the council members will be to name Rosansky’s
replacement on the Planning Commission. Rosansky has stepped down
from the Planning Commission to accept the council position.
Rosansky’s commission was scheduled to end in June of 2007.
Council members tonight will discuss appointing a replacement to
serve out Rosansky’s term.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Council members will probably give staff the go-ahead to begin
accepting applications from potential replacements. If all goes as
planned, the City Clerk’s office will begin accepting applications
until the deadline of Nov. 13.
BOAT FIRE CODES
Nearly half the commercial boats in the harbor are berthed in ways
that violate fire codes. The city wants to do something about it, but
sudden, strict enforcement of the rules would be devastating for many
marine businesses. Instead, council members will consider a plan to
get some businesses to comply gradually.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Some businesses probably won’t like the measures, but council
members hope their compromise solution will offer something for
everyone.
SANTA ANA RIVER CROSSINGS
The city of Newport Beach could benefit from a plan to build two
bridges over the Santa Ana River to carry traffic from Huntington
Beach and Fountain Valley to the Costa Mesa Freeway. Tonight council
members will consider whether the city should take a formal position
on this regional transportation plan.
WHAT TO EXPECT
There’s a good chance City Council members will support the bridge
idea.
