Football: USC offers San Clemente’s Sam Darnold

Despite a commitment from St. Bonaventure quarterback Ricky Town, USC has offered San Clemente quarterback Sam Darnold, Coach Jaime Ortiz said Saturday.

It adds another wrinkle to the quarterback recruiting competition that has seen Blake Barnett of Corona Santiago switch from Notre Dame to Alabama and Town go from Alabama to USC.

Darnold was previously offered by Oregon, which also offered Barnett and is a leading candidate to land Servite quarterback Travis Waller, who is scheduled to announce his decision on July 1. Darnold is also visiting Oregon this weekend, so it looks like competition is the name of the game.
