Rafael Nadal already has missed the London Olympics and several other tournaments due to a knee injury. That list will soon include a major tournament -- the U.S. Open.
Nadal, who won the tournament back in 2010 to complete a career grand slam, announced Tuesday that he has withdrawn from the event, which is set to begin at Flushing Meadows on Aug. 27.
“I am very sad to announce that I am still not ready to play and have to withdraw from this year’s US Open in NYC,” Nadal’s statement said. “I am sorry since I always found great crowds and great support, but I have to continue with my recuperation and preparation to be ready to play in the right conditions.”
Nadal, the former world No. 1 who is currently ranked No. 3, has won 11 Grand Slam titles, including the French Open earlier this year. Last year, Nadal was the runner-up at the U.S. Open, losing in four sets to Novak Djokovic in the final.
But Nadal has been unable to play since his shocking loss to 100th-ranked Lukas Rosol in the second round at Wimbledon.
