Galaxy forward Robbie Keane’s hat trick Saturday not only earned the Galaxy an important 4-2 victory over first-place Real Salt Lake, but Monday it earned him recognition as Major League Soccer’s player of the week.
All three goals came in the second half – the first in the 56th minute to even the score, the second 11 minutes later to give the Galaxy a 2-1 lead and the third in the 86th minute to salt the game away. The victory was the Galaxy’s first in MLS play in a month.
The Galaxy are fourth in the Western Conference standings with 37 points, four behind Real Salt Lake.
Keane is the third Galaxy player to win the league’s weekly honor. Landon Donovan was the player of the week a week ago after scoring three times in a tie with FC Dallas. Mike McGee, since traded to Chicago, was player of the week after the season’s opening weekend.
The Galaxy are back in action Tuesday when they play host to Costa Rica’s Cartaginés in the CONCACAF Champions League at the StubHub Center.
