Racing! Time for your handicapping lesson
- Share via
Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as we learn more strategies to wagering.
Here’s this week’s contribution from Rob Henie of the WCHR (West Coast Handicapping Report) and the ECHR (East Coast Handicapping Report). The thinking is by breaking down a race in detail you can learn to handicap like the pros.
Today, Rob looks at the fourth race at Santa Anita.
This is a Maiden Special Weight at a mile on the turf. Top selection is LADY MAMBA (#1). We’ve got two lessons to be gleamed in this event. In the first we address horses off the layoff and the well-meant runner. Some horses just cannot string races together. Whether looking at Santa Anita or Emerald Downs, it’s something that the handicapper comes across almost daily. When a horse has issues making it to the track in the afternoon, these are the horses in which trainers feel the need to get a good effort when they do indeed get ‘em to the race, not knowing if they’ll even be able to get another race out of them following today’s offering, thus, a good effort today is needed. Peter Eurton has a bit more pressure with this horse today, a $1,000,000 (yes, one million) purchase, knowing they need checks and good efforts right now, hoping they can find some good health for him, but in the meantime, a strong effort and a check is almost mandatory from a horse with obvious high intentions. Look for a ground-saving trip with Flavien Prat pushing from the gate looking for the front end. The other lesson in this one addresses two standouts in a race, in which we’ll ask ourselves, which is the more logical play? ACHIRA (#4) is a super good-looking daughter of English Channel, with two strong efforts to date despite still seeking her maiden win. If the top choice fails to fire, this one is the likely winner, but with regard to “choosing” one, a helpful hint — siding with the runner in front throughout, is usually a stronger angle than the horse needing to find not only quicker early splits to allow for enough progression late, but also forced to find the ideal trip from in behind runners, enough room, not going wide, and all the other fun stuff associated with the closing type of runner. This one is good, but the top pick has the advantage of getting first run turning for home. One final note, our WCHR Claim Appraisals indicate both of these runners are legitimate MSW types, while the rest of the field is composed of 12,500 types. Another mark in the corner of this pair, and we’ll simply throw all the others out, plain and simple.
Race Outlook: Two very nice maidens here, no value but some nice lessons nonetheless.
Maiden Listed Condition: MSW
WCHR Estimated Level: $12,500 (outside of the top two)
Win Contenders (order of preference): 1-4
X Out Runners (eliminating on the win end): 3,5,6,7,8
Positive Notes:
6 Golden Age — She might not be as good as the top two, but when Van Dyke hops aboard, good things happen, a guy who instantly moves runners up, and you can really find out if a horse has anything to offer once Drayden hops off.
Negative Notes:
5 Golden Kitten — When Blacker sends a horse to Northern California, it’s usually not a good thing, not the type of pattern we like to see from a trainer who’s pretty savvy with regard to where to place his horses, as, if he’s looking outside of Southern California, it’s not a positive thing.
TOP PICK: LADY MAMBA (#1 9-5 Prat)
SECOND CHOICE: ACHIRA (#4 5-2 Smith)

Pegasus update
Gun Runner, the presumptive favorite in next Saturday’s Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park, jogged about a mile around the Florida track for the first time on Friday. It was well before the sun was up, so the video isn’t worth watching.
“He’s in such good condition right now, and he’s so fit, when you get him off that van, off an airplane, he knows where he’s at and what he’s getting ready to do,” said Scott Blassi, assistant trainer for Steve Asmussen. The horse flew from Fair Grounds in New Orleans on Thursday night. Unknown if he got an upgrade but likely he got a snack box.
Gun Runner will most assuredly be named Horse of he Year at the Eclipse Awards on Thursday, also at Gulfstream.
Santa Anita review
Ms Bad Behavior won Friday’s feature race, an allowance turf race down the hill at 6 ½ furlongs for a $56,000 purse. Ms Bad Behavior, ridden by Tiago Pereira for trainer Richard Baltas, went stride for stride with Out Of The Flames before putting her head in front to win by a neck. It was her first start on the turf.
“Before she came in, the guys on the farm in Florida told me she had trained better on grass,” Baltas told Santa Anita. “She’s run against some good fillies on dirt, no question. I think she’ll definitely go further…She’ll go a mile for sure.”
Ms Bad Behavior paid $7.20, $3.60 and $3.00.
Santa Anita preview
The large field sizes seem to be softening a bit based on Saturday’s nine-race card. No race has more than eight horses except the seventh race stakes. Two races have only six and two have seven. A blip or the start of an alarming trend? We’ll go with it being a blip for now.
There are four races on the card with the highlight being the Grade 3 $100,000 Las Cienegas for older fillies and mares going 6 ½ furlong down the hill turf course. It’s scheduled to go about 3:30 p.m. with nine starters.
Bendable, for trainer Richard Mandella and jockey Mike Smith, is the 5-2 favorite. She will be making her first start on the turf after four wins in eight tries on the dirt. “I think she has the breeding for the grass,” Mandella told Mike Willman of Santa Anita. “A few horses in her family have liked it, so I think it will be interesting to try.”
Beau Recall, for Simon Callaghan and Corey Nakatani, is the second favorite at 7-2. She has two wins and four seconds in her 10 lifetime starts on the grass. Her last four races were Grade 1s, so she should get some play for being a big class drop.

Bob Ike’s SA play of the day
NINTH RACE No. 8 Ronald R (5-1)
English import from Simon Callaghan barn might be very live in his U.S. debut. He won twice overseas, gets Lasix, is drawn well outside, gets a top rider and the barn does extremely well with Euro imports first time off the bench. Plus, it looks like he runs very well fresh, so expecting a top effort in this spot.
Friday Result: Eagle Screams finished second in the 8th race.
Bob Ike is a Partner/VP of Horsebills.com and the proprietor of BobIkePicks.com (full-card picks, 3 Best Plays and betting strategy).
Ed Burgart’s LA pick of the day
FIFTH RACE: No. 1 Scoopie Jess (4-1)
He was only a head behind rival Matilda Czech when fifth in the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity and can turn the tables from the rail post where he scored two easy wins last November. Scoopie Jess is quick early while Matilda Czech usually finds her best stride during the final 1/8.
