Jim Harbaugh agrees to Michigan coaching job, reports say

Those rumors about Michigan making Jim Harbaugh an offer he could’t refuse appear to be true. Multiple reports say the embattled San Francisco 49ers coach has agreed to become the Wolverines’ next coach.

Harbaugh has been said to be on the way out as the 49ers have struggled to a 7-8 record before finishing the season Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals.

The New York Times first reported that Harbaugh has accepted the deal, which has been reported to be six years at nearly $50 million. Comcast SportsNet Bay Area later reported it has confirmed that that the 49ers coach will depart for Ann Arbor.

For the record: An earlier version of this report listed the 49ers record as 7-6. They are 7-8 heading into the season’s final game on Sunday.

Harbaugh guided the 49ers to three consecutive appearances in the NFC championship game and lost in the Super Bowl two seasons ago to his brother, John Harbaugh, coach of the Baltimore Ravens.

Recent reports, including a major story in Sports Illustrated, said that Harbaugh had a falling out with 49ers management and that a parting of the ways was imminent.

Harbaugh is finishing the fourth year of a five-year contract worth $25 million. Reports said that Harbaugh and the 49ers have an agreement in place to sever ties.

Harbaugh is reportedly flying his family to Ann Arbor on Monday and a news conference could happen as soon as Tuesday.
