French Polynesia: Jean-Michel Cousteau to host four Gauguin sailings

Passengers aboard four Paul Gauguin sailings to the South Pacific next year will meet and hear lectures by oceanographer Jean-Michel Cousteau.

The 76-year-old son of ocean legend Jacques Cousteau will talk about his work with Ocean Futures Society, the organization he founded in 1999.

Like his father, Cousteau has dedicated his life to sharing his love of the sea and educating people about the importance of protecting oceans worldwide.

Cousteau will be on board the 332-guest MS Paul Gauguin on 10-night sailings to the Society Islands & Tuamotus on March 2, June 1 and Sept. 21, all in 2016.

He’ll also sail on a 14-night cruise to the Marquesas, Tuamotus & Society Islands on Nov. 19, 2016.

Prices start at $5,595 per person, based on double occupancy. It includes the cruise and airfare from Los Angeles, according to the cruise line’s website.

The cruise line plans to add another Cousteau program next year too: Ambassadors of the Environment Youth Program. Naturalists teach children about French Polynesian island habitats and ecosystems on board and on land excursions.

Snorkeling, swimming with rays, rain forest hikes and other activities are part of the program. It’s geared for children 9 to 17 years old and costs $329 to $399 per child, depending on which itinerary you choose.
