Germany: Munich celebrates centenary of ‘The Blue Rider’

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) by painters Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc, whose movement and manifesto of the same name gave birth to a golden age of German art.
The group, which included such luminaries as Paul Klee and August Macke, had its first exhibition in Munich in 1911. Its almanac was published the next year. The group disbanded at the start of World War I. Marc and Macke were both killed in action.
In commemeration of this influential group, the city of Munich is offering two Blue Rider-themed tours throughout the year. “On the Trail of Der Blaue Reiter” is a two-hour walking tour (available in English) through the old artists’ quarter, visiting sites connected with the lives and work of Blue Rider painters.
The second tour, “Der Blaue Reiter” at Munich’s Museum for Modern Art, is a guided walk through the paintings created by the Blue Rider movement.
