L.A. Times Travel Show: Exhibitors preparing for Saturday opening

Los Angeles Times Travel editor

Exhibitors were working hard Friday to get their booths ready for the L.A. Times Travel Show, which opens to consumers Saturday.

The show, open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, brings together vendors and travelers , offering information (lots of it!), speakers (Lisa Ling and Arthur Frommer on Saturday, Adam Richman on Sunday and Rick Steves both days) as well as a host of learning opportunities.

Learning opportunities? Well, yes. Staff members from the Los Angeles Times will moderate and serve on panels that will tell you, among other things, how to save money on travel, will help make you a better shopper and give you inside info on how to take better photographs.

Travel, of course, should be fun, and there’s nothing more fun for some than shopping. Alice Short, assistant managing editor/features for The Times, will moderate a panel called “In the Bag” that will “tell travelers about great finds, bargains and, in general, the thrill of the chase,” she said, “why it’s so special to return from a trip with, say, shoes from Italy rather than shoes from the local mall.” She’ll be joined by Times fashion critic Booth Moore and editor of IndependentTraveler.com Sarah Schlichter.

Others prefer to keep their memories in photos. Some people seem like natural-born photographers. Can you improve? Yes, says Christopher Reynolds, longtime staff writer and photographer for the Travel section, who will lead a panel both days of the show on improving photography. “Mark Twain said the difference between the right word and the almost-right word is the difference between lightning and a lightning bug,” Reynolds said. “It’s that way with photos, too--and once you catch lightning once, through skill or dumb luck, you become a sort of storm-chaser. Or at least I have. So I’m counting on these panelists to share a few secrets behind their great results.”

He’ll be joined by Times photo staffers Kathy Pyon and Mark Boster (whose book “Yosemite in Four Seasons” was published in October), and amateur photographer Andrea Ashley, whose work has been featured in the Times Travel section, will share their ideas on making the most of your memories.
