Pound Climbs Above $1.80

LONDON — The British pound jumped in European trading today, rising above $1.80 for the first time in more than five years.
The dollar finished sharply lower after a session of mostly thin and narrow-range trading. Gold prices gained. The pound was given a boost by new signals Thursday from Chancellor of the Exchequer Nigel Lawson that British interest rates wouldn’t be cut soon.
