Responding to “a number of problems” caused every year by firms that claim to have lost their tax notices in the mail, Finance Director Donald Oblander said that substantial penalties await companies that do not renew their business licenses before Feb. 1.
The city issues about 13,500 business licenses a year, said inspector Teddy Wheeler. He said the number who fail to pay the required fees varies every year. The fees are based on type and volume of business.
Penalties are assessed at the rate of 10% a month up to a maximum of 50%, he said.
