Telecommunications: Chicago-based Ameritech said first-quarter net income rose 1% from a year earlier to $303.5 million, while revenue increased 5% to $2.6 billion. The firm said results were affected by one-time expenses of about $54 million related to work force reductions. GTE Corp. posted record first-quarter earnings of $355 million, a gain of 8%. Consolidated revenue and sales were up 9% to $4.5 billion. The Stamford, Conn.-based company said the results were driven by continued strong performance in its telephone operations and other telecommunications businesses. St. Louis-based Southwestern Bell Corp.’s first-quarter profit rose 4% to $247.8 million. Revenue totaled $2.1 billion, up 4% from the same period a year ago. The firm attributed the increased earnings to strong growth in its cellular telephone division and increased access lines in its telephone business. United Telecommunications Inc. said first-quarter net income climbed 41% from a year ago to $108 million. Revenue totaled $2 billion, a gain of 15%. The Kansas City, Mo., firm, which is the parent of US Sprint, the nation’s third-largest long-distance carrier, attributed the results to increased revenue and unit volume at US Sprint.
