BellSouth Corp.: The Atlanta-based telephone company said first-quarter net income slipped 6% to $423.2 million, while revenue edged up slightly to $3.52 billion. The firm attributed the decline to an accounting change, which boosted year-ago results, and an early retirement program in the latest period, which reduced earnings. In addition, the latest quarter’s earnings reflect the reissuance of 17.1 million shares purchased to acquire Mobile Communications Corp. of America.
