Sit Down and Be Counted: Nielsen Media Research will expand its collecting and reporting of data to provide the advertising and television industries with a better picture of minority television audiences, it was announced Tuesday. Starting in 1991, Nielsen will expand its monthly National Audience Demographic Report to include black households and about 20 black demographic categories. Nielsen also will provide marketing information, such as what percentage of a local market is black or Hispanic in its reports. Earlier this year, some members of the black community complained that Nielsen avoided areas that were predominantly black in its audience measurement. Nielsen denied this.
