GTE Corp.: The Stamford, Conn.-based firm, which last week said it plans to take over Contel Corp. in a $6.2-billion stock swap to create the nation’s largest local telephone company, said its second-quarter earnings rose 11% to $364 million. Revenue increased 6% to $4.6 billion. GTE cited modernization of its telephone network and cost-control measures for the improvement.
