U.S. Sues Maker of Toddler Beds: The Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Justice Department filed two lawsuits against Cosco Inc. of Columbus, Ind., in U.S. District Court in Indianapolis seeking a $2.5-million civil penalty. The suits stem from allegations that the company failed to report dozens of consumer complaints about the safety of its model T22 and T23 beds, about 110,000 of which were sold nationwide from December 1990 through December 1991 for children ages 2 to 4. The beds have been recalled. Cosco is also accused of failing to notify the agency of similar incidents involving guardrails sold with the beds and separately as accessories. Cosco said the products were “unquestionably safe” and that it awaits vindication in court.
