United Dumps Leo Burnett, Hires 2 Firms for Ad Campaign: United Airlines’ $120-million-a-year advertising account will be taken over by Minneapolis-based Fallon McElligott and Young & Rubicam of New York, United said. Fallon McElligott will target United’s North American customers, while Young & Rubicam will focus on international markets and media buying, the airline said. The two agencies got United’s business after a competition among several agencies, including Leo Burnett, which had handled United’s ads for 30 years. Chicago-based United had been looking for a new advertising campaign centered on the airline’s new passenger-feedback style of service, said the airline, a unit of UAL Corp. Leo Burnett was responsible for coming up with United Airline’s familiar “Friendly Skies” slogan.
